How Many Meals Should a 6-Month-Old Eat?
Most 6-month-olds start with one solid meal a day and move toward two. Three meals is a later pattern, often closer to 8–9 months. Milk feeds are not reduced to “make room” in the first weeks.
A simple progression
- Weeks 1–2: one short sitting a day
- By 7 months: many babies take two sittings
- By 8–9 months: two to three sittings, still with full milk feeds
Follow the baby, not a chart
If your baby is exhausted or ill, skip the solid sitting. If they are eager, you can offer a second sitting. Solids should not replace a milk feed because the tray was messy.
Frequently asked questions
Should I drop a milk feed when I add lunch?
Not at 6 months. Dropping milk too fast is a common reason babies look like they “aren’t eating enough.”
