Oats for Babies: How to Serve Them Safely
Yes. Cooked oats are a practical breakfast food from about 6 months. Serve as a thick porridge for scooping, or shape warm oats into fingers. Do not add honey before age 1.
Can babies eat oats?
Yes. Rolled oats cooked until creamy are easier than dry instant packets with added sugar. Oats may be contaminated with wheat, so they are not automatically gluten-free.
When can babies have oats?
Around 6 months. Iron-fortified infant cereal is one option; plain cooked oats are another. If using cow’s milk in cooking, remember milk protein is an allergen.
Oats provide energy, fiber, and some iron, especially if you choose fortified oat cereal. They are a useful vehicle for fruit, yogurt, and nut butters already introduced.
How to serve oats
How to serve oats at 6 months

How to serve oats at 9 months
Thick porridge for scooping, oat fingers, or oats baked into a soft pancake. Keep sugar out.
How to serve oats at 12+ months
Oatmeal for spoon practice, plus soft oat muffins if they are low in sugar and easy to mash.
Are oats a choking hazard?
Dry oats and sticky, under-hydrated clumps can be hard to move in the mouth. Cook until creamy. Thin a very gluey mash with extra liquid.
Are oats an allergen?
Oats themselves are not a major allergen, but they often share equipment with wheat. If your baby has celiac disease or wheat allergy, you need certified gluten-free oats and clinician advice.
How much oats can a baby eat?
A few spoonfuls of porridge is a normal start. Milk feeds still come first.
Do oats need to be cooked?
Yes. Dry oats are not a finger food for babies.
